Zurich Tourist Attractions

As a city that boasts one of the world’s best standards of living, tourists are practically guaranteed to derive great satisfaction from a visit to Zurich. Not only does the capital of Switzerland enjoy pleasant weather throughout the year, but it is also home to an abundant choice of exotic tourist attractions. Whether for those seeking to escape the harsh winter cold or sweltering tropical weather, or those simply looking for some decent rest and relaxation, these factors combine to make Zurich an ideal destination for tourists from all four corners of the globe.

One of Zurich’s star attractions lies in its magnificent examples of architectural masterpieces, ranging from ancient to modern works. Among these, the Grossmünster (Great Church) is widely regarded as the city’s symbol. Dating back to the 11th and 13th centuries, this splendid cathedral features two prominent towers that can be seen clearly across the city. The structure also houses the largest crypt in Switzerland and beautiful stained glass windows by Augusto Giacometti. Meanwhile, dating further back to the 9th century, the Fraumünster (Church of Our Lady) is also another major crowd puller and is commonly referred to as the sister church of the Grossmünster. Despite having more history than its counterpart, it is usually the modern stained glass windows by Marc Chagall that attracts visitors. Best seen in the morning light, the stained glass is complemented by the elegance of the slender blue Fraumünster spire at the side. Addtionally, the Fraumünster also has some stained glass done by Augusto Giacometti.

To further appreciate the art and history, visitors can venture into the Schweizerisches Landesmuseum (Swiss National Museum) which displays a multitude of items related to Switzerland and Swiss culture. The collection includes not only the usual fare of paintings and sculptures but extends to musical instruments, tools, battle flags, medals, toys and prehistoric objects as well. For something more in touch with the present, one can head to the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Museum of Contemporary Art). This museum is dedicated to compiling and showcasing modern works of art, particularly those dating from the 1990s. Other notable places that offer similar experiences include the ‘Zur Meisen’ Guild Hall as well as the Museum Rietberg.

For those keen on taking the scenic route and immersing themselves in the bubbling activity of Zurich, head on to Bahnhofstrasse (Station Street). Extending from the main station to the lake, the 1.2 km street is enclosed by a series of historical buildings, and contains a bustling market and shopping area. There are also several excellent antique shops that add to the charm and appeal of this site. Apart from this, visitors can seek enjoyment in places like Zoo Zürich and choose from a variety of cultural activities like dance, theatre and opera.

In addition, the Swiss are also renowned for their impeccable hospitality. Thus, in a place with outstanding living quality, wonderful attractions and first-rate service, it is safe to say that travelers can expect nothing less than a great time in Zurich.
