The Culver Hotel Reopening (Culver City)
Originally opened in 1924 in its nationally landmarked flatiron-style building, The Culver Hotel reopened this summer after a 15-year restoration as part of Proper Hospitality’s The Collective portfolio. Nearly a century after its establishment, the hotel received a refresh with an updated design by hotelier Maya Mallick who thoughtfully restored the 46-room boutique hotel while maintaining its distinct 1920s elegance. The Culver Hotel returns with a new European-inspired bistro Lillie’s, a live music program, an in-house art gallery and meeting, and event spaces. Hotel Per La (Downtown L.A.)
Formerly the site of the NoMad Hotel, the historic Bank of Italy building in Downtown Los Angeles has been reintroduced as Hotel Per La. A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, the 12-story Hotel Per La will feature 241 signature guest rooms and a variety of public spaces, including 10,000 square feet of versatile event space. The property looks to Italy for creative vision with a color palette drawn from the original lobby’s fully restored gold and blue Italianate ceiling, including custom furnishings, curated original artwork and terrazzo floored walk-in showers and pedestal bathtubs in many of the residentially-inspired suites. Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971 explores the visual culture of Black cinema from its early days to just after the civil rights movement. The exhibit is an in-depth, research-driven look into Black participation in American filmmaking, highlighting the work of independent African American filmmakers and creating dialogues with visual artists. The exhibit aims to redefine film history by elevating underrepresented perspectives and presenting a more inclusive story. Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898-1971 is the recipient of The Sotheby’s Prize, founded to support and encourage museums to break new ground by recognizing curatorial excellence and facilitating an upcoming exhibition that explores overlooked or underrepresented art history.
Nubia: Jewels of Ancient Sudan at the Getty Villa (Malibu)

For nearly 3,000 years a series of kingdoms flourished in ancient Nubia (present-day southern Egypt and northern Sudan). The region was rich in sought-after resources such as gold and ivory and its trade networks reached Egypt, Greece, Rome, and central Africa. This exhibition presents highlights from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s extensive collection of Nubian objects, and features superbly crafted jewelry, metalwork, and sculpture exhibiting the wealth and splendor of Nubian society.
Bruce Springsteen Live! at the GRAMMY Museum (Downtown L.A.)

From an intimate look into Springsteen’s creative process to shedding light on how he became – and remains – one of the greatest live performers in rock and roll history, the GRAMMY Museum’s Bruce Springsteen Live! explores the evolution of Springsteen through the decades and grants exclusive backstage access to Springsteen and the E Street Band’s legendary performances. The exhibit showcases exciting pieces of memorabilia including Springsteen’s modified Fender guitar featured famously on the album cover of Born to Run, Clarence Clemons’ iconic saxophone, stage outfits worn by Springsteen and the E Street Band, the ticket booth prop from the Tunnel of Love tour, Max Weinberg’s Tunnel of Love drum kit and Danny Federici’s accordion.

Los Angeles reopened all of Barnsdall Park’s facilities this August, welcoming guests back to enjoy the Park’s many institutions and experiences creating a vibrant, inclusive space for creativity, cultural expression, civic conversation, and social empowerment. Highlights of Barnsdall Park include tours of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House, curated exhibitions at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, and workshops at the Barnsdall Art Center.
New Exhibits at LACMA (Mid-city)
- Conversing in Clay: Ceramics from the LACMA Collection. August 7, 2022 – May 21, 2023. Conversing in Clay: Ceramics from the LACMA Collection explores the medium through 14 case studies, placing historical works in visual dialogue with contemporary examples to illuminate symbolic meanings, technical achievements, and resonances throughout time. The exhibition examines how artists working today relate to international artistic traditions of the medium, both through deliberate references to the past and by engaging with aspects of clay’s materiality that have inspired makers over the centuries.
- Yassi Mazandi: Language of the Birds. August 14, 2022 – June 19, 2023. A kinetic sculptural work by Yassi Mazandi, Language of the Birds takes its name and theme from an epic 12th-century Persian poem by Farid al-Din ‘Attar. The stark, abstract bronze sculptures are suspended from the north side of the Resnick Pavilion. Stripped of feathers, Mazandi’s dramatic birds evoke ‘Attar’s powerful mystical poem universalizing the quest for meaning. They also call to mind today’s key issue—climate change—and the ways in which it imperils many avian species and contributes to human migration.
- Objects of Desire: Photography and the Language of Advertising. September 4 – December 18, 2022. Objects of Desire: Photography and the Language of Advertising trace the artistic manipulation of advertising, the most powerful, mainstream visual language. Since the 1970s, creative innovations led to dramatic shifts in the possibilities for photography as artistic expression, as photo-based artists reworked advertising strategies to challenge the increased commodification of daily life, and later to appropriate the command these images have over the viewer/consumer.
- The Space Between: The Modern in Korean Art. September 11, 2022 – February 19, 2023. A groundbreaking show that is the first of its kind in the West, The Space Between The Modern in Korean Art covers the years 1897 to 1965, loosely organized chronologically, stylistically and conceptually. The second of three major Korean art exhibitions of Hyundai Motor’s Korean Art Scholarship initiative, The Space Between spans the arc of European-influenced art via Japan in the Korean Empire (1897–1910) and colonial period (1910–45), explores American influences absorbed throughout the Korean War (1950–53), and provides a glimpse into the beginning of the contemporary.
New Exhibits at MOCA (Downtown L.A.)
- Tala Madani: Biscuits. September 10, 2022 – February 19, 2023. MOCA is organizing the first North American survey of Iranian-born artist Tala Madani’s paintings and animations. Bringing together fifteen years of the artist’s incisive work, the exhibition will highlight the often-absurd socio-cultural dynamics enacted within Madani’s art and, more broadly, the potent and combustible relationship between art history and global history.
- Garrett Bradley: American Rhapsody. September 10, 2022 – February 19, 2023. Garrett Bradley: American Rhapsody is the first solo museum presentation of the work of Los Angeles and New Orleans-based artist and filmmaker Garrett Bradley. The exhibition features a selection of recent single and multi-channel films and videos, including America (2019), in which Bradley constructs a visual archive of early African American cinema and poignantly asks what it might mean to model a history of black visuality and representation that privileges depictions of pleasure over spectacles of pain.
- Judith F. Baca: World Wall. September 10, 2022 – February 19, 2023. Celebrated Chicana artist Judith F. Baca began her collaborative, portable mural World Wall: A Vision of the Future Without Fear in 1987. Baca painted the first four ten-by-thirty-foot canvas panels; as the work traveled abroad, artists and community groups from Finland, Russia, Israel and Palestine, Mexico, and Canada contributed five additional panels, employing figurative and symbolic visual vocabularies to depict a vision of the future without fear. All nine panels will be shown at MOCA in an enveloping installation. Significantly, this exhibition in the artist’s hometown of Los Angeles is the first-ever complete presentation of this monumental project.

- Reinventing the Américas: Construct. Erase. Repeat. August 23, 2022-January 8, 2023.m This exhibition analyzes representations of the Americas, questioning the mythologies and utopian visions that proliferated after the arrival of Europeans to the continent. Featuring artistic interventions by Denilson Baniwa, an Indigenous contemporary artist from the Amazon region of Brazil, and the voices of local community groups in Los Angeles, Reinventing the Américas counters the views of European chroniclers, illustrators, and printmakers from the 16th to 19th centuries by offering a multi-perspectival approach.
- Dutch Drawings from a Collector’s Cabinet. October 11, 2022 – January 15, 2023. An exhibition of Dutch drawings including figure studies by Rembrandt van Rijn and Ferdinand Bol, rare landscapes by Cornelis Vroom and Jacques de Gheyn II, and botanicals by Maria Sibylla Merian and Jacob Marrel. Featuring over 30 drawings that are new to the collection, many of these artworks have never been shown at the Getty Museum.
- Visualizing the Virgin Mary. October 11, 2022 – January 8, 2023. The Virgin Mary is one of the most important figures in the Christian tradition. This exhibition presents illuminated manuscripts depicting myriad stories and images from the Middle Ages that celebrated Mary as a personal intercessor, a compassionate mother, and a heavenly queen. The legacy of representing Mary is also shown through the venerated image of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the Americas, revealing how Mary provides different meanings for viewers across time.
- Códice Maya de México. October 18, 2022–January 15, 2023. Around 900 years ago, a Maya scribe made Códice Maya de México, a sacred book that tracked and predicted the movements of the planet Venus. Today it is the oldest book of the Americas, one of only four surviving Maya manuscripts that predate the arrival of Europeans. A remarkable testament to the complexity of Indigenous astronomy, Códice Maya de México is on display in the US for the first time in 50 years.
- Uta Barth: Peripheral Vision. November 15, 2022–February 19, 2023. Los Angeles–based photographer Uta Barth has spent her career exploring subtle changes of light as it illuminates various surfaces, documenting the passage of time and investigating the differences between how the human eye and the camera perceive the world. This selection of objects represents the most formative and critically acclaimed projects of Barth’s nearly 40-year career, including the debut of a new multi-part work commissioned by the Getty.
New Exhibits at the California African American Museum (Exposition Park)
- Chloë Bass | #sky #nofilter: Hindsight for a Future America. September 17, 2022 – January 21, 2023. Chloë Bass | #sky #nofilter: Hindsight for a Future America is a photography, text-based, performance art and public sculpture project by conceptual artist Chloë Bass. For this presentation, Bass has conceived a newly commissioned public sculpture in South Los Angeles that features sixteen blue glass panels adapted from the original #sky #nofilter photographs. Together they form a participatory analemmatic sundial, where the viewer’s body functions as the shadow-casting element that determines the time of day. Each sundial panel is engraved with text drawn from Bass’s original #sky #nofilter writings that will cast its own shadow and offer a linguistic point of reflection.
- Justen LeRoy: Lay Me Down in Praise. September 17, 2022 – January 21, 2023. Lay Me Down in Praise, created by multidisciplinary artist Justen LeRoy, is a three-channel film installation that asks how the scream, moan, and melisma—also known as the vocal run— provide a sonic route toward Black environmentalism. LeRoy layers clips of Black performers with images of geological activity. Through this juxtaposition, the artist considers how resistance and regeneration inhabit the wordless screeches of the Earth and the history of Black sound.
New Exhibits at Norton Simon Museum (Pasadena)
- Ink, Paper, Stone: Six Women Artists and the Language of Lithograph. October 14, 2022 – February 13, 2023. Ink, Paper, Stone: Six Women Artists and the Language of Lithography examines the prints of six critically acclaimed artists who visited Los Angeles in the 1960s to explore the art of lithography: Ruth Asawa, Gego, Eleanore Mikus, Louise Nevelson, Irene Siegel and Hedda Sterne. Each woman received a two-month fellowship at the famed Tamarind Lithography Workshop, founded by the visionary printmaker June Wayne in 1960. With its mission to train master printers and pair them with visiting artists, Tamarind was a nexus for the revival of the medium in America.
- Picasso Ingres: Face to Face at Norton Simon Museum. October 21, 2022 – January 30, 2023. Pablo Picasso encountered Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’s late, great portrait Madame Moitessier (1856) at a major retrospective dedicated to the French artist in 1921, and he never forgot it. Eleven years later, while engrossed in a series of works that depict his young lover, Marie-Thérèse Walter, Picasso painted Woman with a Book, one of the most direct homages to Ingres that he had made to date. For the first time, these two extraordinary, interrelated paintings will be displayed together in a special exhibition entitled Picasso Ingres: Face to Face. A partnership between the National Gallery, London, and the Norton Simon Museum, this exhibition explores Picasso’s long-standing fascination with Ingres and the generative process that resulted from his confrontation with a celebrated work of art.

Huttopia recently celebrated the opening of its first West Coast location, Huttopia Paradise Springs tucked away in the San Gabriel Mountains. A lush canyon oasis set on 135 acres of scenic forest, the site was previously home a to prohibition-era retreat that welcomed the likes of Charlie Chaplin and John Wayne. First Automated People Mover Train Car Unveiled

The first train car that will be part of the forthcoming Automated People Mover at Los Angeles International Airport was unveiled to the public for the first time on August 2. The Automated People Mover is the centerpiece of LAX’s $5.5 billion Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP) which will enhance the traveler experience, give guests time-certain access to terminals and provide the long-awaited connection to the regional transportation system.
