HOTELS

Trends: Downtown L.A. is seeing some exciting new additions to the hotel scene, including the bold Moxy Downtown Los Angeles and home-away-from-home Hotel Per La. Coming right on the heels of the Conrad Los Angeles’ nearby opening, these DTLA hotels offer guests a wide range of accommodation options designed as home bases for exploring the neighborhood’s thriving art, culture, entertainment, and sports scenes.

RECENTLY OPENED

The Culver Hotel Reopening (Culver City)
Originally opened in 1924 in its nationally landmarked flatiron-style building, The Culver Hotel reopened this summer after a 15-year restoration as part of Proper Hospitality’s The Collective portfolio. Nearly a century after its establishment, the hotel received a refresh with an updated design by hotelier Maya Mallick who thoughtfully restored the 46-room boutique hotel while maintaining its distinct 1920s elegance. The Culver Hotel returns with a new European-inspired bistro Lillie’s, a live music program, an in-house art gallery and meeting, and event spaces. The Culver Hotel continues to be a timeless and luxury-minded destination for guests and locals alike to experience authentic Hollywood history through various touch points, warm hospitality and a tailor-made approach for every occasion.

Hotel Per La (Downtown L.A.)
Formerly the site of the NoMad Hotel, the historic Bank of Italy building in Downtown Los Angeles has been reintroduced as Hotel Per La. A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, the 12-story Hotel Per La will feature 241 signature guest rooms and a variety of public spaces, including 10,000 square feet of versatile event space. The property looks to Italy for creative vision with a color palette drawn from the original lobby’s fully restored gold and blue Italianate ceiling, including custom furnishings, curated original artwork and terrazzo floored walk-in showers and pedestal bathtubs in many of the residentially-inspired suites. The property’s debut also includes Bar Clara, a new rooftop pool deck featuring a Californian menu and extensive cocktail and wine selection, as well as Per L’Ora, a signature restaurant serving elevated Italian cuisine influenced by flavor profiles of East L.A.

Moxy (Downtown Los Angeles)
Late 2022
Reflecting the bold, adventurous spirit of California, Moxy Downtown Los Angeles is designed to be a haven for modern nomads in L.A.’s creative epicenter. A hotel by Marriott, the new AC Hotel Downtown Los Angeles will blend the brand’s timeless Spanish Heritage with DTLA’s artistic soul. Renovations at Courtyard Marriott Century City/Beverly Hills
Courtyard Marriott Century City/Beverly Hills debuted all new sleeping rooms, common areas, and patio space complete with a fire pit and revamped landscaping. The $4.5 million renovation also included a newly configured hotel exterior, updating the property to welcome guests with modern spaces and improved experiences.

Through the hotel’s new Canine Camaraderie program offered to all furry guests, The Shay is quickly becoming a go-to destination for travelers and their dogs. Trends: The excitement in Downtown L.A. continues with new offerings at neighborhood favorites. Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne’s Caldo Verde at the Downtown L.A. Proper has welcomed a curated new Sunday Supper series, and asterid by Ray Garcia has launched a new Sunday Brunch menu on their patio overlooking Grand Avenue and Walt Disney Concert Hall. Abernethy’s also announced the latest in their lineup of emerging chef residencies, inviting diners to experience Chef Geter Atienza’s modern Filipino menu.

Market Chicken (Mid-City)
The Original Farmers Market recently welcomed Market Chicken, a rotisserie-style concept from the family team behind Market favorites Pampas Grill and Phil’s Deli and Grill. The newest addition to the ever-growing roster of culinary specialties at the Market, Market Chicken features spicy rotisserie chicken along with more traditional flavors that are marinated for several days before being cooked. Seven side dishes are offered to compliment the chicken while sandwiches, salads, and wraps round out the menu. 

Runway on 16th at Hilton Los Angeles Airport (Westchester)

Newly opened French-Mediterranean restaurant, rooftop, and lounge, LouLou presents guests with a beautiful atmosphere and authentic European cuisine. Featuring eye-catching greenery, candlelit trees, and earthy joinery design components, LouLou serves up dishes like fresh oysters, house-made pasta, escargot, and more prepared with organic ingredients from fresh local farms. 

Deep Sea Tasting Room at Ventura Harbor Village (Harbor Village)
The new Deep Sea Wine Tasting Room in the Ventura Harbor Village offers a memorable wine-tasting experience for visitors and locals alike. Conway Family Wines created a relaxed, hip, maritime vibe in the picturesque Ventura Harbor serving handcrafted Deep Sea and Conway wines by the glass, by the bottle or in one of their Tasting Flights paired with artisanal cheeses and chocolates. The Winery’s Signature Flight and Reserve Wine Tasting Flight offer visitors a flight of individual wines to try, consisting of five 1.5oz pours of a curated selection of their most popular Deep Sea and Conway Wines. Sunday Supper at Caldo Verde (Downtown L.A.)
Caldo Verde, Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel’s signature Portuguese-inspired restaurant helmed by James Beard Foundation Award-winning chef Suzanne Goin and restaurateur Caroline Styne, has announced a new “Sunday Suppers” dinner series. As part of the series, the restaurant will feature a new and inventive pre-fixe menu each week as curated by chef Suzanne Goin. Inspired by the seasons and using only the freshest locally and regionally sourced ingredients, each dish and menu has been developed with the guest experience in mind. Reservations for Sunday Supper at Caldo Verde are open now and can be made via OpenTable.

Sunday Brunch at asterid (Downtown L.A.)
asterid by Ray Garcia is now open for brunch on the patio every Sunday serving dishes like chia pudding, bibimbap, oxtail, and an all-new lineup of brunch cocktails. The acclaimed Chef Ray Garcia’s Modern American menu and bar program is unexpected, offering contemporary sensibility, inspiring curiosity and paying respect to the independent spirit of L.A. With views spanning Grand Avenue and The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, asterid is the perfect spot for an afternoon out.

New Emerging Chef Geter Atienza at Abernethy’s (Downtown L.A.)
Next in Abernethy’s lineup of emerging chefs comes Chef Geter Atienza. From now through December, Chef Geter is using his residency to highlight a Modern Filipino menu inspired by his upbringing in the Philippines with southern California spins on classic recipes from his grandmother. Showcasing locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients, Chef Geter aims to bring the heart of his family’s kitchen to Abernethy’s dining room.

November
From the team behind Arts District favorite LA Cha Cha Chá comes a new restaurant concept, Za Za Zá. Slated to open this November, Za Za Zá will specialize in dishes from Northern Mexico including Baja-style seafood, charcoal-grilled meats, and Sinaloa-style mariscos by Executive Chef Paco Moran, plus a full cocktail menu and outdoor seating.

Art Delectables Organic Dessert Co. (Westchester)
November
Art Delectables Organic Dessert Co. will open its first Grab & Go location in Westchester, just minutes from the beach and Los Angeles International Airport. With a variety of desserts like organic Lemon Poppy and Bananas Fosters Cheesecake, brownies with sweet dark cherries and port wine, French macarons, freshly baked cakes, and more, Art Delectables’ treats are handmade from organic, non-GMO ingredients with 30% less sugar. 

ARTS & CULTURE

Trends: An abundance of new exhibits have opened in museums all across the city, with several presenting new lenses, perspectives, and voices shedding light on events and artistic pieces in history. Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971 at the Academy Museum redefines film history by presenting a more inclusive look at Black cinema, and Judith F. Baca’s World Wall at MOCA shares a collaborative, multicultural vision of a future without fear. Meanwhile, Reinventing the Américas at the Getty Center counters the views of European chroniclers by offering a multi-perspectival approach to analyzing and deconstructing utopian visions of the Americas in history.

Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971 at the Academy Museum (Mid-City)
August 21, 2022 – April 9, 2023
Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971 explores the visual culture of Black cinema from its early days to just after the civil rights movement. The exhibit is an in-depth, research-driven look into Black participation in American filmmaking, highlighting the work of independent African American filmmakers and creating dialogues with visual artists. The exhibit aims to redefine film history by elevating underrepresented perspectives and presenting a more inclusive story. Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898-1971 is the recipient of The Sotheby’s Prize, founded to support and encourage museums to break new ground by recognizing curatorial excellence and facilitating an upcoming exhibition that explores overlooked or underrepresented art history.

Nubia: Jewels of Ancient Sudan at the Getty Villa (Malibu)
October 12, 2022–April 3, 2023
For nearly 3,000 years a series of kingdoms flourished in ancient Nubia (present-day southern Egypt and northern Sudan). The region was rich in sought-after resources such as gold and ivory and its trade networks reached Egypt, Greece, Rome, and central Africa. This exhibition presents highlights from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s extensive collection of Nubian objects, and features superbly crafted jewelry, metalwork, and sculpture exhibiting the wealth and splendor of Nubian society.

Bruce Springsteen Live! at the GRAMMY Museum (Downtown L.A.)
October 15, 2022 – April 2, 2023
From an intimate look into Springsteen’s creative process to shedding light on how he became – and remains – one of the greatest live performers in rock and roll history, the GRAMMY Museum’s Bruce Springsteen Live! explores the evolution of Springsteen through the decades and grants exclusive backstage access to Springsteen and the E Street Band’s legendary performances. The exhibit showcases exciting pieces of memorabilia including Springsteen’s modified Fender guitar featured famously on the album cover of Born to Run, Clarence Clemons’ iconic saxophone, stage outfits worn by Springsteen and the E Street Band, the ticket booth prop from the Tunnel of Love tour, Max Weinberg’s Tunnel of Love drum kit and Danny Federici’s accordion.

Barnsdall Art Park (East Hollywood)
Los Angeles reopened all of Barnsdall Park’s facilities this August, welcoming guests back to enjoy the Park’s many institutions and experiences creating a vibrant, inclusive space for creativity, cultural expression, civic conversation, and social empowerment. Highlights of Barnsdall Park include tours of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House, curated exhibitions at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, and workshops at the Barnsdall Art Center.

Good American Flagship Store (Century City)
Early 2023
Good American, the inclusive fashion brand co-founded by Khloe Kardashian, has announced plans for opening its first-ever physical Flagship store at Westfield Century City, Los Angeles’ premier destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Dedicated to setting new standards for fashion brands to provide an inclusive shopping experience, the brick-and-mortar shop will expand on this mission to offer a better experience for customers of all shapes and sizes from start to finish by delivering an even more inviting, accommodating, and empowering space to shop. Rally Days at SoFi Stadium (Inglewood)
Rally Days give NFL fans an experience of a lifetime the day prior to Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers home games. Run through the tunnel just like your favorite player, throw a football on the field and even have a chance to check out the team’s locker room during this guided tour experience. Hosted exclusively during the NFL season, these tours feature a sneak peek into SoFi Stadium as fans and the team gear up for the game day. 

This Is Us Sites Tour
On Location Tours has officially launched its brand new This Is Us Sites Tour, commemorating the company’s expansion to the West Coast. Fans of the heartwarming drama series can join the private tour alongside an expert local actor tour guide, who will lead fans to familiar Los Angeles locations that were featured in the show.  Some guest-favorite sites featured on the tour include Paramount Studios where Kevin Pearson performed on stage in front of his family, Rebecca Pearson’s house where she lived in her later years, the Taix French restaurant where Randall and Beth had their first date, the old-timey ice cream shop where Kate went to get ice cream with her father when she was little. January 9, 2023
Less than a year after hosting Super Bowl LVI, Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium will welcome college football’s biggest event, the College Football Playoff National Championship. On January 9, 2023, L.A. will host its fifth college football title game in the last 20 years as the latest in a string of major sporting events taking place in the City of Angels.

Huttopia Paradise Springs (San Gabriel Mountains)
Huttopia recently celebrated the opening of its first West Coast location, Huttopia Paradise Springs tucked away in the San Gabriel Mountains. A lush canyon oasis set on 135 acres of scenic forest, the site was previously home a to prohibition-era retreat that welcomed the likes of Charlie Chaplin and John Wayne. Today, the site features tents equipped with electricity and hot water that run off solar power, a café bistro, a stunning springwater-fed pool, and outdoor lounge areas. The revived ready-to-camp retreat provides the comfort of beds, private bathrooms, showers, and camp kitchens all while remaining grounded in the natural surroundings of Angeles National Forest with abundant opportunities for outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, and creek swimming.

Stretch & Sip Yoga Classes at Hilton L.A. Culver City (Culver City)
Every Saturday morning, locals and hotel guests are invited to start their weekend off with a rejuvenating yoga class taught by SoulPlay Yoga on the Hilton Los Angeles Culver City’s Ballroom Terrace. First Automated People Mover Train Car Unveiled 
August 2
The first train car that will be part of the forthcoming Automated People Mover at Los Angeles International Airport was unveiled to the public for the first time on August 2. The Automated People Mover is the centerpiece of LAX’s $5.5 billion Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP) which will enhance the traveler experience, give guests time-certain access to terminals and provide the long-awaited connection to the regional transportation system.
