Talchum, Korea Mask Dance becomes UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

“Talchum, mask dance drama in the Republic of Korea” is added to the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on the morning of November 30 during the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Rabat, Morocco.

Korea’s mask dance includes 18 types: Yangju Byeolsandae Nori, Tongyeong Ogwangdae, Goseong Ogwangdae, Gangnueng Danoje, Bukcheong Saja Noreum, Bongsan Talchum, Dongnae Yaryu, Gangyeong Talchum, Suyeong Yaryu, Songpa Sandae Nori, Eunyul Talchum, Hahoe Byeolsingut Tallori, Gasan Ogwangdae, Toegyewon Sandae Nori, Yecheon Cheongdan Noreum, Jinju Ogwangdae, Gimhae Ogwangdae, and Sokcho Saja Nori.

Korea now has a total of 37 UNESCO World Heritages including 22 Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, 13 Cultural Heritages, and two Natural Heritages.

Cultural Heritage Administration is planning to commemorate Talchum by hosting a ceremonial performance presented by mask dance masters.
