Spain’s tourism sector continues to lead in job creation in July with 143,524 more people employed than last year

Spain reached 8 million international air passengers in October, islands included, up 6% in 2019

The month of July closed with 2,702,645 Social Security affiliates linked to tourist activities, which represents a year-on-year growth of 5.6% and the creation of 143,524 new jobs, according to data released last week by Turespaña.

Thus, July is the fourth consecutive month in which the number of affiliates is exceeded compared to the same month of 2019 (2,617,860). The tourism sector continues to lead the creation of employment in our country, representing 13.3% of the total number of affiliates in the national economy.

“The good employment data shows that tourism will be one of the sectors that will contribute the most to job creation and economic recovery this year. In addition, the quality of employment is improving, thanks to the labour reform approved by the Government”, Reyes Maroto pointed out.

For the head of Tourism, “the sector is benefiting from the desire to travel that both residents and international travellers have who have chosen Spain for its safety against covid and for its excellent tourism products in both the sun and beach segment. , such as rural and urban tourism. At the moment, inflation is not affecting the decision to travel and the measures adopted by the Government such as fuel rebates or tax cuts such as lowering VAT on electricity are providing relief for many families”.

Branches of activity

The hotel industry gained 198,931 affiliates (122,530 in food and beverage services and 76,401 in accommodation services), while in travel agencies there was an increase of 5,203 workers. The set of other tourist activities registered a decrease of 60,610 workers.

In the hotel industry and travel agencies/tour operators together, sectors that represent 70.3% of the total number of affiliates registered for employment with Social Security in tourism, affiliates increased by 12% year-on-year. This increase was due to both the increase in wage earners (15%) and the self-employed (0.3%).

By Autonomous Communities

In the month of July 2022, employment in the hotel industry and travel agencies/tour operators increased in all the Autonomous Communities. In absolute figures, the greatest increases occurred in Andalusia, Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, the Valencian Community and the Madrid Community.

In relative terms, the interannual increase in the Balearic Islands (23.1%) and the Canary Islands (19.3%) stands out.
