Spain’s “Tomatina” festival returns after a gap of two years

Spain's "Tomatina" festival returns after a gap of two years

Spain: Thousands of people gather to celebrate the “Tomatina” festival on Wednesday (Aug 31) in the Spanish town of Buñol. After a two-year gap due to the pandemic once again this unusual fiesta brings together crowds of people hurling tomatoes at each other.

A convoy of six trucks carrying 130 tonnes of ripe tomatoes rolled through the eastern town’s narrow streets, as teams on board distributed the load among the baying crowd for an hour-long frenzy. Within a few seconds, everything turns red.

The festival attracts foreigners, in particular from Australia, Britain, Japan and the United States.

In 2002 Spain’s tourism secretary named the event a “festivity of international tourist interest” because of its popularity.
