Spain sees a jump in tourists hotel stays of 60.7% in July 2022 compared to July 2021

Spain: The reports from the National Statistics Institute (INE) of Spain reveal, During the month of July, overnight stays in hotel establishments exceeded 42.3 million, an increase of 60.7% compared to the same month in 2021 when there were 26.3 million.

In terms of origin, overnight stays by travellers resident in Spain exceeded 15.6 million, representing 36.9% of the total. On the other hand, those of non-residents exceeded 26.7 million.

On the other hand, the average stay increased by 11.6% compared to July 2021, standing at 3.4 overnight stays per traveller.

During the first seven months of 2022, overnight stays increased by 187.7% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Destinations

Andalusia, Catalonia and the Valencia Region were the main destinations for travellers resident in Spain in July, with 24.4%, 15.5% and 13.9% of the total number of overnight stays, respectively.

The main destination chosen by non-residents was the Balearic Islands, with 35.9% of the total number of overnight stays. The following destinations for non-residents were Catalonia and the Canary Islands, with 20.4% and 18.8% of the total, respectively.

Hotel occupancy

In July, 69.9% of the bed places offered were filled, with an annual increase of 33.5%. The occupancy rate by bed places at weekends rose by 28.0% to 73.2%.

The Balearic Islands had the highest occupancy rate by bed places in July (87.6%). It was followed by the Canary Islands, with 74.9%.

By tourist areas, Palma – Calvià achieved the highest occupancy rate by bed places (88.3%) and the highest weekend occupancy rate (88.3%). The island of Mallorca recorded the highest number of overnight stays in July, with 7,778,904.

The tourist spots with the highest number of overnight stays are Barcelona, Calvià and Madrid. Santanyí has the highest occupancy rate by bed places (97.8%), while Santa Margallida has the highest weekend occupancy rate (92.7%).

Overnight stays by country of origin of travellers

Travellers from the United Kingdom and Germany accounted for 26.6% and 17.1%, respectively, of total overnight stays by non-residents in hotel establishments in July.

Overnight stays by travellers from France, the Netherlands and Italy (the next largest source markets) accounted for 9.0%, 5.0% and 4.4% of the total respectively.

Hotel prices

The annual rate of the Hotel Price Index (HPI) stood at 16.4% in July, which is 7.9 points higher than that recorded in the same month of 2021, and 4.2 points lower than that recorded last month.

By Autonomous Community, the largest increases in hotel prices with respect to July 2021 were seen in the Autonomous Community of Navarre (32.4%) and the Autonomous Community of Madrid (30.7%).

On the other hand, the only decline was recorded in the autonomous city of Melilla, with an annual rate of change of -2.7%.

By category, the highest price increase occurred in five-star gold establishments (21.0%).

Profitability of the Hotel Sector

The average daily turnover of hotels per occupied room (ADR) is €121.4 in July, an increase of 17.5% compared to the same month in 2021.

On the other hand, the average daily revenue per available room (RevPAR), which is conditioned by the occupancy rate registered in hotel establishments, reached 89.9 euros, an increase of 56.6%.

By category, the average turnover is 275.8 euros for five-star hotels, 129.3 euros for four-star hotels and 101.8 euros for three-star hotels. The revenue per available room for these same categories is 199.1, 103.8 and 78.9 euros, respectively.

The tourist spot with the highest ADR is Marbella, with an average daily turnover per occupied room of 290.41 with the highest ADR being Marbella, with an average daily turnover per occupied room of 290.4 euros. It also has the highest RevPar, with an income per available room of 232.8 euros.
