Spain recovered 85% of pre-pandemic international passengers in April 2022

The number of passengers arriving in the Balearic and Canary Islands almost reached 2019 levels

Spain received almost 7 million passengers (6,963,964) from international airports in April, which means recovering 85.6% of those who arrived in that same month of 2019 and multiplying by eight those who came a year ago, according to the conjuncture note published this week by Turespaña from Aena records.

International air passengers arriving in the Canary Islands in April totalled 1,110,216 people, just 0.2% below the arrivals for the same month in 2019, driven mainly by travellers from the United Kingdom and Germany. Tenerife South and Fuerteventura airports even exceed pre-pandemic values ​​by 4.1% and 0.1%, respectively. In the case of the Balearic Islands, arrivals by air (1,139,613) represent a recovery percentage with respect to the pre-pandemic of 96.8%, with the German market as the main country of origin.

If the islands show the highest level of recovery compared to the pre-pandemic period, Catalonia and the Valencian Community are the ones that register the highest year-on-year growth, of 1006.3% and 962% respectively.

From EU countries and in ‘low cost’

The majority of passengers came from the European Union (58.4%) and traveled to a low-cost company (60.9%).

By country, the United Kingdom was the main issuing market, with 1,601,009 travellers, 23% of the total; followed by Germany, with 1,121,843 passengers, and a share of 16.1%; France (597,070 passengers and an 8.6% share) and Italy (596,349 passengers and an 8.6% share).

Markets such as the Netherlands and Ireland show a degree of recovery that is close to the levels of 2019. Passengers arriving in Spain from these two countries are barely, respectively, 0.6 and 0.7% below arrivals three years ago. years.
