Spain: In July, Spain received the visit of nearly 9.1 million international tourists who spent a total of 11,869 million euros on their journey, according to data from the Frontur and Egatur surveys published this week by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). These figures represent a recovery of 92% of arrivals in the same month of 2019 and practically equal the expenditure of July 2019 (-0.6%).
“This is extraordinary data that confirms our forecasts that in 2022 we would already experience a summer like the ones before, despite the challenge represented by the current inflation context. Added to the recovery of our main European markets is the growth in arrivals from the US, a market that is also approaching pre-pandemic figures”, the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, has assessed.
In July, the average expenditure per tourist increased by 100 euros compared to the same month in 2019, going from 1,209 to 1,309 euros. The average stay also increased from 7.5 to 7.7 days. In the accumulated figure for the year, arrivals in July exceeded 39 million and spending reached 47,637 million euros.
Main markets
The United Kingdom was the main source market with 1.9 million tourists (88% of those who came in July 2019); followed by France, with more than 1.4 million (98% compared to 2019) and Germany, with about 1.1 million, representing 88% of those who arrived in the pre-pandemic.
Several markets have issued more travellers to Spain than in the pre-pandemic stage, as is the case of the Netherlands, with 556,650 (+9.5%); Belgium 418,309 (+8.6%); or Portugal, with 301,749 (+17.6%).
Among distant markets, the good performance of the US stands out, which has issued 361,498 tourists, equivalent to 85% of arrivals in July 2019.
Main destination Autonomous Regions
Illes Balears was the main destination chosen by international tourists in July. One out of every four tourists who came to Spain went to this archipelago, which thus received almost 2.3 million tourists, mainly British and German. Illes Balears practically reaches pre-pandemic numbers, with a recovery of 97% compared to July 2019.
Catalonia follows with nearly two million, representing 83% of arrivals in the same month of 2019. Catalonia is chosen mainly by the French and other European countries.
In third place, the Valencian Community received 1.1 million international tourists, mainly British and French, which account for 90.5% of those who arrived in 2019.
In the accumulated of the year, the communities that receive the most tourists are Catalonia, with almost 8 million; Illes Balears, with almost 7.5 million and Canarias, with almost 6.8 million.
