Ski Holidays in Europe

Ski Holidays in Europe

You plan to go skiing and you know your destination should be Europe. But where in Europe can you start? A few countries offer possibilities and in this article, we will only deal with a few of them. Unless your trip takes you to a certain country and skiing is not the primary goal, then start in one of these cities.

Gateways to the Alps

Zurich, Switzerland, maybe your gateway as you head for Switzerland and Austria. Simply leave your skies at the Left Luggage facility at the airport or station. This is something you can do in many countries, especially if you do not have much time. Do not stay at the airport, scared to leave your luggage. Catch the train into Zurich and find a cheap hostel. Dormitory style accommodation is not for everyone but you are not going to be there most of the time. Until you are exhausted you will spend the time sightseeing.  Find Niederdorf and visit a smoky bar or a packed disco or a restaurant.

Geneva Switzerland

If you want to go to the French Alps, Val DaCosta in Italy or you are going towards the Valais in Switzerland, Geneva can be your gateway.

Frankfurt, Germany

Spend a night or two on your way towards your final destination in this city. Easy to reach from the airport and if you are not in a hurry, take the train and head for the Romerberg, a square near the Main River and after that do some shopping at the Zeil, Frankfurts most fashionable pedestrian shopping street.

Munich Germany

Your goal is skiing but since you are here, you need to spend an evening in the city, visiting the beer halls. The formidable one-litre mug is not a joke. Take it and drink as much as you like. Again you have the main square called Marienplatz, but you can visit art museums and go and see a castle or two.

Innsbruck Austria

Already in the Alps, this gateway is the easiest if you want to arrive as close to your final destination as possible. Skiers are welcome everywhere and you can dress in your ski outfit.  A walk through the old town will give you an opportunity to see the oldest buildings. Visit the Hofburg palace and St. Jacobs cathedral.

Three more places will bring you to the skiing countries

Salzburg Austria is famous for being used in The Sound of a Music film.  Milan Italy, around two hours, drives from the main ski resorts but like the other cities, offers a feast of old buildings and history. Lyon France, a gourmet centre and a meal in one of the leading restaurants will be an experience you will savour for a long time.

Ski Holidays in Andorra

The French Pyrenees are known for being a skier’s nirvana. Located on the borders of Spain and France, they offer skiers some of the best slopes in the world. Though many visitors choose to stay in either Spain or France, there is one more option. For the best in skiing, services and hospitality, the tiny country of Andorra should be your holiday destination. It’s got everything that you need at half the price.

Andorra is located in the Pyrenees surrounded by Spain and France. Once an isolated and unknown land, it is now a highly prosperous country because of its tourism industry. At an average of 83.5 years, the people of Andorra claim the highest life expectancy in the world. Because of its position within the mountains, the country doesn’t have much in common with the rest of Europe, except for Spain and France. It’s gone through many changes over the years, like being occupied by France and declaring war on imperial Germany during World War I.

Today, Andorra enjoys its status as the skiing tourist’s hotspot. Nearly eight million visitors come to the country every year before the Covid-19 pandemic hit the globe.

Travellers enjoy its slopes and world-class resorts. Its duty-free status is another reason that it has so many visitors, as goods can be purchased much cheaper than in the rest of Europe.

Grandvalira, the largest ski resort in Andorra, is getting more visitors every year.

Andorra skiers in the New Year enjoyed a metre of snowpack and powdered snow. With the snowfall, the resort was able to maintain 100% per cent ski lift use and 95 per cent slope use, some of the highest numbers in the Pyrenees region. These conditions kept skiers coming from all around the globe, and as many as one and a half million skiers could have enjoyed the slopes over the course of the season.

Pas de la Casa was the original name of the ski resort that was integrated into Grandvalira.

Note: Due to the Omicron virus outbreak, many nations imposed several travel restrictions, Check the latest updates before planning.
