Satpura and Bhedaghat included in UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list

Satpura Tiger Reserve located at Bhedaghat-Lamhetaghat in Jabalpur and Pachmarhi in Hoshangabad district in MP has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site, Union Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel has described it as a moment of pride for the state.

Jabalpur: In this crucial phase of pandemic, Madhya Pradesh has something to cheer for, the state famous Satpura Tiger Reserve located at Bhedaghat-Lamhataghat and Pachmarhi in Jabalpur has been listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The announcement was made by Principal Secretary Tourism, Sheo Shekhar Shukla.

Informing further, the secretary mentioned that on April 9, a proposal was sent by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board to include the Satpura Tiger Reserve and Bhedaghat-Lamheta Ghat within the tentative list of UNESCO to the Director-General ASI, Government of India 2021.

The tourism board had assigned WII category-2 heart-based in Dehradun for the identification of potential sites in Madhya Pradesh, these sites were identified after years of analysis, and groundwork, for this, three major workshops were also organized in various Indian cities.

The city of Bhedaghat in Madhya Pradesh is known for its magnificent waterfalls, and striking marble rocks set on either side of the River Narmada. The most famous waterfall here is known as Dhuandhar which is a sight to behold.

Satpura Tiger Reserve, however, is in the Hoshangabad District. Spread over an area of 524 sq/km, Satpura National Park was set up in 1981. The park is home to leopards, sambars, nilgais, four-horned antelope, wild boars, foxes, and flying squirrels, among others.

Apart from these two, 6 places including Ganga Ghat of Banaras, Kanchipuram Temple in Tamil Nadu, Maratha Military Architecture Serial Maharashtra, Megalithic site of Karnataka Hire Bankal has been included in this list this year.

ASI, the organization of the Union Ministry of Culture, had proposed 9 sites for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list, UNESCO has included 6 of these sites in the list.
