Stadler has won a contract to supply eight electrical multiple units for the Centovalli railway (often known as the Valle Vigezzo railway in Italy) that connects Domodossola in Italy with Locarno in Switzerland.
The new electrical trains will substitute the present rolling stock on the road beginning in 2023. The contract is price within the area of 94 million CHF (86.6 million euros). The client – Ferrovie Autolinee regional Ticinesi SA – is a new one for Stadler. It’s the third-order Stadler has obtained from Ticino in the past two years.
The 52km Centovalli railway is a meter-gauge line. That is the first time Stadler is constructing new narrow-gauge multiple units for regional and cross-border rail services within the canton of Ticino, operating into Italy’s Piedmont area. The order contains 4 four-car units (63m) that will run between Locarno and Domodossola and 4 three-car units (49m) that may present regional transport providers within the Centovalli.
The four-car units could have a capacity of 343 passengers (141 seated), the three-car units 264 passengers (106 seated). The trains could have areas reserved for wheelchair customers, bicycles, and prams. The car bodies will be made from aluminum.
The Centovalli railway opened in 1923 in order that the new trains will enter into passenger service throughout its centenary yr.
