Guests and overnight stays in Portugal reach a historical maximum in August

Overnight Stays In June 2022 From Non-residents Exceed 2019 Levels In Ra Madeira, Norte And Ra Açores

Portugal: According to the Statistics Portugal data Published on Friday (July 29), “The tourist accommodation sector registered 2.7 million guests and 7.2 million overnight stays in June 2022, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of +97.3% and +110.2%, respectively (+162.3% and +221.7% in May, in the same order). Compared to June 2019, there were decreases of 2.6% and 0.4%, respectively.”

In June, the domestic market contributed with 2.3 million overnight stays (+16.5%) and the external markets totalled 4.8 million (+241.8%). Compared to June 2019, the domestic market grew by 7.0% and external markets decreased by 3.5%.

In the first semester of 2022, overnight stays increased by 252.4% (+84.1% in residents and +529.5% in non-residents). Compared to the same period in 2019, overnight stays decreased by 7.0% (+5.2% for residents and -11.9% for non-residents).

In the second quarter of 2022, overnight stays increased by 209.9% (-0.2% compared to 2Q 2019). Overnight stays from residents increased by 55.6% (+9.9% compared to 2Q 2019) and those from non-residents grew by 450.1% (-4.1% compared to 2Q 2019).

In June, 15.7% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or had no movement of guests (28.4% in June 2021).
