Overnight stays by foreign tourists in Finland’s Lapland region increased by one-fifth in December 2022

According to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data, the number of nights spent by tourists was 12 percent higher in December 2022 than one year earlier. In total, 1.07 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists, which is five percent more than in December 2021. For non-resident tourists, 0.73 million overnight stays were recorded, which is nearly one-quarter more than in December 2021.

In Lapland, overnight stays numbered 0.55 million in total, of which 80 per cent were by foreign tourists.

A new one-month record for overnight stays by foreign tourists was attained in Lapland. The previous record from December 2019 was exceeded by eight per cent.

In the whole country the highest numbers of foreign visitors came from Great Britain, France and Germany. British visitors accounted for nearly one third of all overnight stays by foreign visitors.

The hotels in Rovaniemi were almost sold out. In the whole country, the occupancy rate of hotel rooms was 47 per cent.

In Rovaniemi, the average price of a hotel room was EUR 301. In the whole country, the average price of a hotel room was EUR 134.
