Thousands of flights were cancelled due to massive winter storms in the US

(Reuters) – New York, Boston and different cities within the northeast could be blanketed with almost two ft (60.96 cm) of snow on Monday, as a “long duration” major winter storm headed towards the U.S. coast, the National Weather Service stated.

Snow is expected to begin late Sunday night throughout a wide swath of the northeast, with “in excess of 20 inches of snow in parts of eastern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, southern New York, and into southern New England,” the NWS stated in the bulletin.

The storm could paralyze New York City, which as of Sunday night was forecast to be on the center of the Nor’easter’s bluster, stated meteorologist Brian Hurley, of the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland.

“It’s a widespread area with 10 to 20 inches of snow coming,” Hurley stated. “The sweet spot looks like it will be right around New York City.”

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio stated during a Sunday press conference that schools could be closed on Monday and that officers are rescheduling appointments for coronavirus vaccinations.

“There’s going to be tremendous danger and difficulty getting around on Monday,” de Blasio stated. “The last thing we wish to do is urge our seniors to come out in the middle of a storm like this.”

The NWS releases travel warnings throughout the northeast as wind gusts of as much as 50 miles per hour are forecast for Monday, creating blinding, blowing snow.

The storm will slowly transfer into northern New England Tuesday night and solely dissipate on Wednesday, Hurley stated.

Snow hit the Washington D.C. metropolitan space, with over 2 inches reported in several areas.
