MTR Service Extension on New Year’s Eve to Cope with the Resumption of Countdown Events 6,480 Additional Train Trips for Festive Season of Winter Solstice and Christmas

Hong Kong: In view of the latest COVID-19 pandemic situation, a number of countdown events will be arranged on the upcoming New Year’s Eve (31 December) in Hong Kong to welcome the arrival of 2022. To facilitate the public to enjoy the festivities, MTR services (except the Airport Express and Disneyland Resort Line) will be extended on that day, with the last trains departing one hour later than normal. MTR Corporation will also enhance train services for four consecutive weekends starting from 11 December 2021 (Saturday), as well as on the Winter Solstice, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, Christmas and New Year holidays. Over 6,480 additional train trips will be deployed under the service enhancement.

“After two years of battling with the pandemic, we anticipate that the public will go out more to celebrate the upcoming festive season as the pandemic situation has stabilised. We are therefore enhancing the train services and deploying additional trains for the public to enjoy the festivities,” said Ms Jeny Yeung, Hong Kong Transport Services Director of MTR Corporation.

From 11 December 2021 (Saturday) to 2 January 2022 (Sunday), the Corporation will increase train frequencies on six railway lines including the Island, Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, South Island, East Rail and Tuen Ma lines on weekends, Christmas and New Year holidays. The most frequent train trips on the Tsuen Wan Line and Kwun Tong Line will be maintained at around 2-minute intervals.

Additional train trips will be provided starting from the afternoon on the Winter Solstice, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve (21, 24 and 31 December 2021) to serve passengers’ travel needs.

In addition, from December 2021 to 3 February 2022, the Airport Express will enhance its services to 15-minute intervals during most of the time on event days at Asia World-Expo, whilst the Disneyland Resort Line will step up services to 5-minute intervals during peak hours from 18 December till the end of December 2021, as well as the New Year and Lunar New Year holidays.

To celebrate the festive joy, from now till 27 December, interactive 3D photo zones featuring “Santa T-Chai” will be set up at eight MTR stations, namely Hong Kong, Admiralty, Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, Kowloon Tong, Tsing Yi, Olympics and Tsuen Wan stations. Passengers can get into the Christmas spirit when travelling on MTR, and may strike a pose at the zone and take enchanting snapshots during their MTR journeys.
