Macao reports 167,000 visitors during the five-day May Day Holiday, according to the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).
The city recorded a new highest daily record of 45,000 arrivals and a daily average of 33,000 visitors. The average hotel occupancy rate during the holiday was 83.2 percent.
An MGTO spokesman noted that 156,000 of the arrivals came from the mainland, nearly 92 percent of the total.
The daily average variety of arrivals rose by 158.2 percent compared with the Chinese New Yr holiday last February.
The occupancy rate of three-star hotels reached 86.6 percent, while four- and five-star hotels recorded an 84.8 percent average occupancy rate. The average hotel occupancy rate was close to the corresponding figure in 2019 at 96.6 percent.
The average room rate for hotels and guesthouses was about MOP 1,263 during the holiday. This marked an increase of 1.7 percent compared with Chinese New Yr. The average room rates for five-star and four-star hotels were around MOP 1,475 and MOP 885 respectively.
The MGTO conducted 28 inspections throughout the holiday, targeting border checkpoints and tourist attractions, as well as hotels for their implementation of Covid-19 pandemic preventive measures, but found no irregularities.
The MGTO has deployed online and offline promotional initiatives targeting the mainland visitor market with the aim of highlighting Macau’s image as a safe and quality destination, “spurring a gradual upward trend of visitor arrivals”, Macau Post Daily reported.
In the future, the MGTO will promote Macao within the mainland through different channels and initiatives to encourage more visitors to explore the city and spend in local communities in order to stimulate the revival of the economy.
