Los Angeles International Airport Nears 4 Million Passengers In January

Los Angeles, CA: Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) announced Tuesday (Mar 1) that year-over-year passenger volume continues to show strong recovery, with 3.96 million passengers using Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in January 2022, a 131% increase from 1.72 million passengers in the same month last year.

“Coming off of the strong winter holiday season, the surge in COVID-19 cases had a noticeable impact on flights and passengers, but we still saw positive growth compared with January 2021 and see signs of significant recovery as we look ahead this year,” said Justin Erbacci, Chief Executive Officer, LAWA. “While we are not back to our pre-pandemic numbers, the airlines are adding additional flights as we anticipate robust spring and summer travel seasons that will hopefully further fuel a return to air travel.”

For January 2022, LAX reported 3,092,543 domestic passengers, which is 1.7 million more guests than the 1,378,414 in January 2021. A total of 867,265 international travellers used LAX in January of this year, a gain of 156% from the same month in 2021, which had 339,198 international travellers.

The January 2022 passenger traffic at LAX is 40.7% lower than the 6,678,451 passengers who used LAX in January 2020. Much of the difference remains international travel, which was down 57.8% in January 2022 compared with 2020, while domestic travel was down 33.1% compared with two years ago.
