LAX reports Travel Boost with growth in Passenger Numbers In February

Aena’s network airports close 2022 with an 88.5% recovery of 2019 traffic and over 243.6 million passengers

Los Angeles, CA: Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) reported on Monday (Apr 4) that more than 4 million passengers used Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in February 2022, over 150% more than in the same month last year, and also again over January 2022, despite having three fewer days.

“A boost from the Super Bowl and a greater demand for travel as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to an increase in the number of guests using LAX in February,” said Justin Erbacci, Chief Executive Officer, LAWA. “We anticipate continued improvement in our passenger numbers in March, based on data from the Transportation Security Administration, and we are looking forward to very busy spring and summer travel seasons.”

The February 2022 total of 4,080,905 passengers includes 3,336,451 flying domestic routes and 744,454 international travellers. The number of international passengers is 228.8% higher than the 226,389 in February 2021, while domestic travel is up 139.4% from 1,393,881 in that year.

Compared to January 2022, domestic travel at LAX increased 7.9% in February (from January’s 3,092,543), while international travel was down 14.2% (from 867,265). Overall, LAX reported a passenger gain of 3.1% between January and February 2022.

The numbers are still significantly lower than February 2020, which was the last full month before stay-at-home orders were issued in California and throughout much of the world. LAX served 5,821,460 passengers in February 2020.

LAX handled a total of 216,822 tons of air cargo in February 2022, a 3 per cent increase over the 210,455 tons in the same month in 2021.
