Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has welcomed more than 48 million travelers this year through September, surpassing the airport’s total passenger volume for all of 2021. Year-over-year international passenger traffic doubled in September, guided by new and returning air services and strong demand.
The airport reported a total of 5,598,840 passengers in September, up from 4,372,077 in the same month last year. The increase of more than 28% is largely due to international travelers, which totaled 1,482,096 – more than double the 731,187 international travelers reported in September 2021.
“LAX finished the summer travel season in a strong position, with significant gains in international passenger traffic as global pandemic restrictions ease and travelers continue to seek a return to destinations around the world,” said Justin Erbacci, Chief Executive Officer, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). “We are excited to have already surpassed our total number of passengers last year, and we are ready to welcome more travelers as we near the holiday season.”
For the year through September, overall passenger traffic at LAX is up 47.32% compared with the same time in 2021 with a total of 48,668,515 passengers. The number of international guests during that time is up 126.84% compared to 2021 (11,951,133 vs. 5,268,578), while domestic passengers are up 32.23% (36,717,382 vs. 27,767,905) so far this year.
