Japan’s government on Tuesday (Nov 15) announced that it preparing to reopen its ports to international cruise ships in line with the easing of border controls for inbound tourists. Sources from the Transport and Tourism ministry said that they are planning to allow the vessels as long as they abide by guidelines drawn up by an industry group on measures to prevent coronavirus infections and responses to outbreaks.

“If suspected cases occur on a ship, the crew is to conduct necessary testing and isolation measures and report to quarantine officials before the vessel docks”, sources added.

Japan has barred international cruise ships since March 2020, after the outbreak on the Diamond Princess forced 3,711 passengers and crew members to quarantine on board for two weeks, during which 13 people died and more than 700 others were infected.

A cruise ship is scheduled to leave Yokohama in December for Mauritius and return in January.
