In September 2022, the number of international visitor arrivals to Indonesia at the main entry gates was 538.32 thousand, dramatically increasing by 10,768.46 percent compared with September 2021. At the same time, international visitor arrivals in September 2022 increased by 5.50 percent compared with the previous month.
From January to September 2022, the number of international visitor arrivals to Indonesia at the main entry gates was 2.27 million, which increased by 2,530.58 percent over the same period in 2021.
The room occupancy rate of classified hotels in September 2022 was 50.02 percent, an increase of 13.38 percentage points from September 2021. Meanwhile, the room occupancy rate in September 2022 increased by 2.64 percentage points compared with August 2022. On the other hand, the room occupancy rate of non-classified hotels in September 2022 was 23.39 percent, which increased by 3.44 percentage points from September 2021 but slightly decreased by 0.30 percentage points from August 2022.
The average length of stay of foreign and Indonesian guests at classified hotels during September 2022 was 1.64 days, which increased by 0.05 percentage points compared with September 2021. While compared with the previous month, the average length of stay in September 2022 decreased by 0.02 percentage points.
International Visitor Arrivals to Indonesia
A total of 2.27 million international visitor arrivals to Indonesia at the main entry gates were recorded from January to September 2022, rising significantly by 2,530.58 percent from last year. During that period, the number of international visitor arrivals comprised 1.87 million by air transport mode, 379.86 thousand by sea transport mode, and 21.83 thousand by land transport mode.
The number of international visitor arrivals to Indonesia at main entry gates in September 2022 was 538.32 thousand, scaling up by 10,768.46 percent compared with September 2021. In the meantime, international visitor arrivals increased noticeably by 5.50 percent compared with August 2022. From the total visitor arrivals in September 2022, as many as 424.20 thousand were by air transport mode, 109.16 thousand by sea transport mode, and 4.96 thousand by land transport mode.
In September 2022, international visitor arrivals by air transport mode scaled up by 8,834.25 percent compared with September 2021. The airport with the highest increase was Juanda Airport-Jawa Timur, at 457.50 thousand percent, and was followed by Kualanamu Airport- Sumatera Utara and Soekarno Hatta Airport-Banten, at 196.40 thousand percent and 2.62 thousand percent, respectively. Compared with August 2022, air transport arrival increased by 0.40 percent. The highest increase was recorded in Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport-Riau, at 132.48 percent, followed by Yogyakarta International Airport-DI Yogyakarta and Sultan Hasanuddin Airport-Sulawesi Selatan, at 52.19 percent and 39.36 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, three airports experienced a decline and the highest decrease was recorded in Husein Sastranegara Airport-Jawa Barat, at 100.00 percent.
The number of international visitor arrivals by sea transport in September 2022 increased by 84.52 thousand percent compared with September 2021. A dramatic increase in Batam- Kepulauan Riau was recorded by 60.35 thousand percent. Meanwhile, compared with the previous month, the number of international visitor arrivals by sea transport also experienced an increase of 32.45 percent. The highest increase was recorded in Tanjung Benoa-Bali, at 43.75 percent. While the lowest increase was recorded in Dumai-Riau, at 12.20 percent.
Furthermore, international visitor arrivals by land transport in September 2022 rose significantly by 6.43 thousand percent compared with September 2021. The significant climb was experienced by Atambua Border Station-Nusa Tenggara Timur, at 3.56 thousand percent. On the other hand, the number of arrivals by land transport mode in September 2022 decreased by 6.96 percent compared with August 2022. Entikong Border Station-Kalimantan Barat, experienced the highest decrease, followed by Atambua Border Station-Nusa Tenggara Timur, at 76.91 percent and 14.36, respectively. Meanwhile, international visitors to Aruk Border Station-Kalimantan Barat, rose by 47.26 percent compared with the previous month.
From the number of arrivals in September 2022, international visitors from all regions experienced positive growth compared with September 2021. International visitors from Oceania recorded the highest positive growth of 59.00 thousand percent, while the lowest growth was from Africa at 3.43 thousand percent. Compared with the previous month, international visitors from ASEAN region recorded the highest growth of 22.36 percent. In comparison, international visitors from the Middle East and Europe experienced negative growth at 14.27 percent and 14.54 percent, respectively.
Regarding nationality, the number of arrivals at the main entry gates to Indonesia during September 2022 was dominated by international visitors from Australia, with 92.39 thousand (17.16 percent). Singapore followed it with 85.99 thousand (15.97 percent), Malaysia with 57.24 thousand (10.63 percent), India with 33.30 thousand (6.19 percent), and the United Kingdom with 22.90 thousand (4.25 percent).
Meanwhile, the length of stay of the international visitors who left Indonesia in September 2022 was 11.37 days. On average, international visitors from the ASEAN region have the shortest length of stay, 5.30 days. International visitors from Europe have the longest average length of stay, which was 17.90 days. By nationality, the longest average length of stay was recorded for international visitors from Russia at 51.74 days, while the shortest was recorded for tourists from Singapore at 3.48 days.
Room Occupancy Rate (ROR) of Hotels
The room occupancy rate of classified hotels in Indonesia in September 2022 was 50.02 percent. Kalimantan Timur had the highest room occupancy rate of 60.25 percent, followed by Lampung and Jawa Timur, with 55.22 percent and 54.67 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, with a room occupancy rate of 32.67 percent, Maluku became the province with the lowest room occupancy rate.
The room occupancy rate in September 2022 was 13.38 percentage points higher than in September 2021. An increase in the rate of room occupancy happened in most provinces. Bali had the highest increase of 36.99 percentage points, followed by Kepulauan Riau (18.64 percentage points) and Banten (13.59 percentage points). Meanwhile, Riau recorded the lowest increase at 1.24 percentage points. On the other hand, eight provinces recorded negative growth in room occupancy rate, with Papua having the highest decrease at 15.52 percentage points.
The room occupancy rate in September 2022 increased by 2.64 percentage points, compared with August 2022. The highest increase was recorded in Sulawesi Barat, at 8.18 percentage points, followed by Bali (8.08 percentage points) and Bengkulu (6.58 percentage points). In comparison, Nusa Tenggara Barat experienced the lowest increase at 0.16 percentage points. On the other hand, nine provinces experienced a decrease in room occupancy rates. Kalimantan Utara and Nusa Tenggara Timur had the highest decrease, 4.33 percentage points, and 1.96 percentage points, respectively.
The room occupancy rate of non-classified hotels in September 2022 was 23.39 percent. DKI Jakarta had the highest room occupancy rate of 42.00 percent, followed by Kepulauan Riau and Lampung, with 31.98 percent and 30.15 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, Banten recorded the lowest occupancy rate of non-classified hotels at 15.36 percent.
In line with the classified hotel, the room occupancy rate of non-classified hotels also increased by 3.44 percentage points compared with the previous year. Bali had the highest increase by 17.14 percentage points, followed by Kepulauan Riau and DKI Jakarta at 9.29 and 8.25 percentage points, respectively. The lowest increase was in Kalimantan Barat at 0.53 percentage points.
Compared with the previous month, the room occupancy rate of non-classified hotels experienced a decrease of 0.30 percentage points. The highest decrease was experienced in Sulawesi Selatan and Bengkulu, at 6.86 and 6.04 percentage points, respectively. Meanwhile, the lowest decrease was recorded in Sulawesi Utara at 0.17 percentage points. In total, the room occupancy rate of classified hotels and non-classified hotels was 38.72 percent in September 2022, which increased by 10.55 percentage points compared to September 2021 and also increased by 1.35 percentage points compared with the previous month.
In terms of the classified hotels, the highest room occupancy rate in September 2022 was recorded in 4-star-rated hotels at 54.39 percent, while the lowest was in 1-star-rated hotels at 31.08 percent. Compared to September 2021, the highest increase was recorded in 5-star- rated at 20.02 percentage points, while the lowest increase occurred in 1-star-rated hotels at 6.75 percentage points. Meanwhile, compared with August 2022, the highest increase was reported in 5-star-rated classified hotels at 4.33 percentage points, while the lowest increase occurred in 1-star-rated hotels at 0.16 percentage points.
Average Length of Stay of Foreign and Indonesian Guests
The average length of stay of guests at classified hotels in September 2022 was 1.64 days, which increased by 0.05 points compared with September 2021. However, the average length of stay in September 2022 recorded a decline of 0.02 points compared with the previous month. On average, in September 2022, foreign guests stayed longer in classified hotels than Indonesian guests, at 2.49 days and 1.58 days, respectively. The highest average length of stay at classified hotels in September 2022 was in Bali and Papua Barat, at 2.36 days and 1.94 days respectively. Meanwhile, the shortest of stayed in classified hotels was in Sulawesi Tenggara at 1.16 days. Regarding the foreign guests, the highest average length of stay in classified hotels was in Riau at 4.44 days. Given Indonesian guests, the highest average length of stay in classified hotels was in Bali at 2.14 days.
Growth of Air Transport
The number of domestic air transport passengers in September 2022 was 4.1 million and decreased by 2.93 percent compared to August 2022. The decrease of passengers occurred at all airports observed, namely Ngurah Rai-Denpasar by 12.22 percent, Kualanamu-Medan by 7.19 percent, Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang by 4.28 percent, Hasanuddin-Makassar by 3.77 percent, and Juanda-Surabaya by 2.02 percent. The highest number of passengers, reaching
1.3 million or 31.53 percent of the total passengers, was recorded at Soekarno Hatta- Tangerang. The second highest was 339.1 thousand or 8.17 percent of the total passengers, which happened at Juanda-Surabaya.
Meanwhile, the number of domestic air transport passengers from January to September 2022 was 38.1 million and increased by 93.74 percent over the same period last year, which reached 19.7 million. The highest number of passengers was at Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang, which reached 11.6 million, or 30.47 percent of the total passengers. The second was at Juanda-Surabaya, with 3.2 million or 8.31 percent.
The number of international air transport passengers in September 2022 was 919.3 thousand and increased by 11.52 percent compared to August 2022. The increase of passengers occurred at all airports observed, namely Hasanuddin-Makassar by 65.00 percent, Juanda- Surabaya by 35.66 percent, Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang airport by 12.43 percent, Kualanamu- Medan by 9.38 percent, and Ngurah Rai-Denpasar by 4.46 percent. The highest number of passengers was 444.9 thousand or 48.40 percent of the total passengers at Soekarno Hatta- Tangerang. It was followed by Ngurah Rai-Denpasar, 311.3 thousand or 33.86 percent of the total passengers.
From January to September 2022, the number of international air transport passengers using national or foreign flights was 4.1 million and increased by 910.58 percent compared to the same period in 2021. The highest number of passengers reached 2.3 million, or 57.09 percent of the total passengers recorded at Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang. It was followed by 1.2 million, or 29.40 percent of the total passengers, at Ngurah Rai-Denpasar.
