In August 2022, international visitors’ arrival to Indonesia at the main entry gates reached 510.25 thousand visits

Indonesia saw 657.27 thousand international visitor arrivals in November 2022

In August 2022, the number of international visitor arrivals to Indonesia at the main entry gates was 510.25 thousand, dramatically increasing by 28,727.46 percent compared with August 2021. At the same time, international visitor arrivals in August 2022 increased by 6.98 percent compared with the previous month.

From January to August 2022, the number of international visitor arrivals to Indonesia at the main entry gates was 1.73 million, increased by 2,028.65 percent over the same period in 2021.

The room occupancy rate of classified hotelsi n August 2022 was 47.38 percent, an increase of 22.31 percentage points from August 2021. Meanwhile, the room occupancy rate in August 2022 decreased by 2.39 percentage points compared with July 2022. On the other hand, the room occupancy rate of non-classified hotels in August 2022 was 23.69 percent, which increased by 6.87 percentage points from August 2021, but slightly decreased by 1.00 percentage points from July 2022.

The average length of stay of foreign and Indonesian guests at classified hotels during August 2022 was 1.66 days, increased by 0.06 percentage points compared with August 2021. While, compared with the previous month, the average length of stay in August 2022 increased 0.05 by percentage points.

International Visitor Arrivals to Indonesia

A total of 1.73 million international visitor arrivals to Indonesia at the main entry gates were recorded from January to August 2022, rising significantly by 2,028.65 per cent from last year. During that period, the number of international visitor arrivals comprised 1.44 million by air transport mode, 270.71 thousand by sea transport mode, and 16.87 thousand by land transport mode.

The number of international visitor arrivals to Indonesia at main entry gates in August 2022 was 510.25 thousand, scaling up by 28,727.46 per cent compared with August 2021. In the meantime, international visitor arrivals increased noticeably by 6.98 per cent compared with July 2022. From the total visitor arrivals in August 2022, as many as 422.50 thousand were by air transport mode, 82.41 thousand by sea transport mode, and 5,332 by land transport mode.

In August 2022, international visitor arrivals by air transport mode scaled up by 26,158.55 per cent compared with August 2021. Most airports experienced positive growth, except Sultan Badarudin II Airport-Sumatera Selatan which recorded a decrease of 99.16 per cent. The airport with the highest increase, from 4 to 10,287 (257.08 thousand per cent), was Kualanamu Airport-Sumatera Utara and was followed by Juanda Airport-Jawa Timur and Sam Ratulangi Airport-Sulawesi Utara at 83.76 thousand per cent and 35.06 thousand per cent, respectively. Compared with July 2022, the air transport arrival increased by 9.12 per cent. The highest increase was recorded in Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport-Riau, at 265.63 per cent, followed by Juanda Airport-Jawa Timur, at 37.77 per cent. At the same time, the lowest increase was recorded in Soekarno Hatta Airport-Banten, at 1.89 per cent.

The number of international visitor arrivals by sea transport in August 2022 increased by 55.21 thousand per cent compared with August 2021. A dramatic increase was recorded in Batam- Kepulauan Riau by 40.00 thousand per cent. Meanwhile, compared with the previous month, the number of international visitor arrivals by sea transport experienced a decrease of 4.37 per cent, where the highest decrease was recorded in Tanjung Benoa-Bali, at 48.39 per cent. On the other hand, Tanjung Pinang-Kepulauan Riau and Batam-Kepulauan Riau recorded positive growth at 42.54 per cent and 5.55 per cent, respectively.

Furthermore, international visitor arrivals by land transport in August 2022 rose significantly by 44.33 thousand per cent compared with August 2021. The highest climb was experienced by Atambua Border Station-Nusa Tenggara Timur, by 25.90 thousand per cent. At the same time, the number of arrivals by land transport mode in August 2022 increased by 48.03 per cent compared with July 2022. Nanga Badeau Border Station-Kalimantan Barat experienced the highest decrease, followed by Atambua Border Station-Nusa Tenggara Timur, at 2,020.00 per cent and 171.54, respectively.

Meanwhile, international visitors to Aruk Border Station- Kalimantan Barat, declined by 35.88 per cent compared with the previous month.

From the number of arrivals in August 2022, international visitors from all regions experienced positive growth compared with August 2021. International visitors from Oceania recorded the highest positive growth of 349.27 thousand per cent, while the lowest growth was from America at 4.46 thousand per cent. Compared with the previous month, international visitors from Africa recorded the highest growth of 23.23 per cent, while international visitors from the Middle East and America experienced negative growth at 27.20 per cent and 0.08 per cent, respectively.

Regarding nationality, the number of arrivals at the main entry gates to Indonesia during August 2022 was dominated by international visitors from Australia, with 84.08 thousand (16.48 per cent). Singapore followed it with 62.51 thousand (12.25 per cent), Malaysia with 46.77 thousand (9.17 per cent), India with 30.57 thousand (5.99 per cent), and France with 26.70 thousand (5.23 per cent).

Meanwhile, the length of stay of the international visitors who left Indonesia in August 2022 was 12.60 days. On average, international visitors from the ASEAN region have the shortest length of stay, 6.22 days. International visitors from Europe have the longest average length of stay, which was 17.88 days. By nationality, the longest average length of stay was recorded for international visitors from Russia at 46.19 days, while the shortest was recorded for tourists from Singapore at 3.76 days.

Room Occupancy Rate (ROR) of Hotels

The room occupancy rate of classified hotels in Indonesia in August 2022 was 47.38 per cent. Kalimantan Timur had the highest room occupancy rate of 60.32 per cent, followed by DKI Jakarta and Banten, with 54.76 per cent and 54.30 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, with a room occupancy rate of 27.35 per cent, Maluku became the province with the lowest room occupancy rate.

The room occupancy rate in August 2022 was 22.31 percentage points higher than in August 2021. An increase in the rate of room occupancy happened in most provinces. Bali had the highest increase of 33.60 percentage points, followed by DI Yogyakarta (32.21 percentage points) and DKI Jakarta (23.96 percentage points). Meanwhile, Aceh recorded the lowest increase at 4.23 percentage points. On the other hand, three provinces recorded negative growth in room occupancy rate, with Maluku having the highest decrease at 9.76 percentage points.

The room occupancy rate in August 2022 declined by 2.39 percentage points, compared with July 2022. The highest decrease was recorded in DI Yogyakarta, at 9.05 percentage points, followed by Jawa Timur (6.51 percentage points) and Kepulauan Bangka Belitung (6.12 percentage points). In comparison, Gorontalo experienced the lowest decrease at 0.20 percentage points. On the other hand, eight provinces experienced an increase in room occupancy rate. Papua Barat and Maluku Utara had the highest increase, 4.46 percentage points and 4.19 percentage points, respectively.

The room occupancy rate of non-classified hotels in August 2022 was 23.69 per cent. DKI Jakarta had the highest room occupancy rate of 41.86 per cent, followed by Kepulauan Riau and Riau, with 33.37 per cent and 28.68 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, Banten recorded the lowest occupancy rate of non-classified hotels at 14.39 per cent.

In line with the classified hotel, the room occupancy rate of non-classified hotels also increased by 6.87 percentage points compared with the previous year. Bali had the highest increase by 18.41 percentage points, followed by Kepulauan Riau and Kalimantan Utara at 13.00 and 11.99 percentage points, respectively. The lowest increase was in Kalimantan Selatan at 0.88 percentage points.

In contrast, three provinces had negative growth, and Banten had the highest decrease at 1.90 percentage points.

Compared to the previous month, the room occupancy rate of non-classified hotels experienced a decrease of 1.00 percentage points. The highest decrease was experienced in Kalimantan Selatan and Sulawesi Tengah, at 6.24 and 4.26 percentage points, respectively. Meanwhile, the lowest decrease was recorded in Kepulauan Riau at 0.48 percentage points. In total, the room occupancy rate of classified hotels and non-classified hotels was 37.37 per cent in August 2022, increased by 16.50 percentage points compared with August 2021 but decreased by 2.00 percentage points compared with the previous month.

In terms of the classified hotels, the highest room occupancy rate in August 2022 was recorded in 4-star-rated hotels at 50.24 per cent, while the lowest was in 1-star-rated hotels at 30.92 per cent. Compared to August 2021, the highest increase was recorded in 5-star-rated at 30.78 percentage points, while the lowest increase occurred in 1-star-rated hotels at 12.26 percentage points. Meanwhile, compared to July 2022, the highest decrease was reported in 1-star-rated classified hotels at 4.04 percentage points. However, the 5-star-rated hotels recorded a slight increase at 0.62 percentage points compared with the previous month.

The average length of stay of foreign and Indonesian guests at classified hotels in August 2022 was 1.66 days, an increase of 0.06 points compared with August 2021. In the same way, the average length of stay in August 2022 increased by 0.05 points compared with the previous month. On average, in August 2022, foreign guests stayed longer in classified hotels than Indonesian guests, at 2.42 days and 1.59 days, respectively.

The highest average length of stay at classified hotels in August 2022 was in Gorontalo and Bali, at 2.05 days and 2.04 days respectively. Meanwhile, the shortest of stayed in classified hotels was in Sulawesi Barat at 1.23 days. Regarding the foreign guests, the highest average length of stay in classified hotels was in Gorontalo at 4.69 days. Given Indonesian guests, the highest average length of stay in classified hotels was also in Gorontalo at 2.01 days.

Growth of Air Transport

The number of domestic air transport passengers in August 2022 was 4.3 million and decreased by 15.06 per cent compared to July 2022. The decrease of passengers occurred at all airports observed, namely Juanda-Surabaya by 22.80 per cent, Hasanuddin-Makassar by 18.26 per cent, Ngurah Rai-Denpasar by 16.41 per cent, Kualanamu-Medan by 16.13 per cent, and Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang by 12.75 per cent. The highest number of passengers, reaching 1.4 million or 31.98 per cent of the total passengers, was recorded at Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang. The second highest was 345.7 thousand or 8.09 per cent of the total passengers, which happened at Juanda-Surabaya.

Meanwhile, the number of domestic air transport passengers from January to August 2022 was 33.9 million and increased by 91.81 per cent over the same period last year, which reached 17.7 million. The highest number of passengers was at Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang, which reached 10.3 million, or 30.34 per cent of the total passengers. The second was at Juanda- Surabaya, with 2.8 million or 8.32 per cent.

The number of international air transport passengers in August 2022 was 824.3 thousand and increased by 32.29 per cent compared to July 2022. The increase of passengers occurred at all airports observed, namely Hasanuddin-Makassar by 400.00 per cent, Juanda-Surabaya by 82.93 per cent, Kualanamu-Medan by 81.70 per cent, Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang airport by 31.90 per cent, and Ngurah Rai-Denpasar by 18.63 per cent. The highest number of passengers was 395.7 thousand or 48.00 per cent of the total passengers at Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang. It was followed by Ngurah Rai-Denpasar, 297.4 thousand or 36.08 per cent of the total passengers.

From January to August 2022, the number of international air transport passengers using national or foreign flights was 3.2 million and increased by 788.81 per cent compared to the same period in 2021. The highest number of passengers reached 1,9 million, or 59.61 per cent of the total passengers recorded at Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang. It was followed by 890.1 thousand, or 28.08 per cent of the total passengers, at Ngurah Rai-Denpasar.
