Hungary tourism nights fell by 0.4% compared to February 2022

Hungary: In February 2023, 552 thousand guests spent 1.4 million tourism nights in commercial accommodation establishments (hotels, boarding houses, camping sites, bungalow complexes, and community hostels). The number of guests decreased by 1.0% and that of tourism nights by 0.4% compared to February 2022. The number of nights spent by domestic guests decreased by 13% and that of nights spent by foreign guests grew by 17%. In January-February 2023, domestic visitors spent 4.4% fewer and foreign visitors 26% more tourism nights than in the same period of the previous year.

In February 2023:

The number of domestic tourist arrivals fell by 11% and that of tourism nights by 13% compared to the same month of the previous year. The former was 305 thousand and the latter 694 thousand. 77% of the nights were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 11% lower than a year earlier. Turnover was down 17% in boarding houses and 19% in community hostels compared with February 2022. The two most popular tourist regions, the Budapest–Central Danube Region and Lake Balaton, recorded 27% and 17% of domestic tourism nights respectively.

International tourist arrivals increased by 16% and tourism nights by 17% compared to the same month of the previous year. A total of 247 thousand guests stayed in accommodation establishments for 686 thousand nights. 83% of these nights were spent in hotels, where the number of nights spent was 17% higher than a year earlier. The most popular tourism region was the Budapest–Central Danube Region, where 65% of international tourism nights were registered.

Total gross sales revenues were nearly HUF 30 billion, 42% higher year-on-year at current prices.

Cardholders paid 7.6% more, HUF 1.7 billion, with their Széchenyi Recreation Cards in commercial accommodation.

1,873 commercial accommodation establishments, including 778 hotels and 847 boarding houses, were open for part or all of the month.

Total nights spent were split 50-50% between domestic and foreign guests.

In January-February 2023, compared to the same period of the previous year:

Commercial accommodation establishments recorded an increase of 8.5%, with a total of 2.8 million tourism nights.

Domestic guests spent 4.4% fewer tourism nights in commercial accommodation establishments and foreign guests 26% more (1.4 million tourism nights each).

The total gross revenue of commercial accommodation establishments at current prices increased by 51% to nearly HUF 62 billion.
