Hong Kong removed the flight suspensions policy

Hong Kong drops on-arrival PCR tests for inbound travelers

The Hong Kong government decided to suspend from today (July 7) the route-specific flight suspension mechanism until further notice.

The government issued a statement on Thursday (July 7) that said “It would suspend its policy of imposing a five-day flight route ban if at least five passengers – or five per cent of travellers, whichever is higher – test positive for Covid-19 upon arrival”. It caused about 100 flight cancellations since the beginning of the year.

Travellers will still require to show vaccination proof, book a quarantined hotel for seven days, undergo daily rapid tests, as well as undergo six PCR tests over a 14-day period.

A Government spokesman said, “The decision to implement the new measures was made upon careful review of relevant data, and the fact that it is currently the peak period for students studying aboard to return to Hong Kong. The relevant measures can help reduce the impact on inbound persons, and will particularly enable young people staying in overseas places to return to Hong Kong smoothly to reunite with their families during the summer holiday. The measures will also prevent the transmission of imported cases into the community in a more precise and effective manner, in order to maximise the anti-epidemic effectiveness with the lowest social costs.”
