The six colorful and hugely popular Glass of Thrones installations in Belfast has gone on permanent display
Belfast, Ireland: Tourism Ireland has given the freestanding stained-glass windows to the Maritime Belfast Trust, and the striking collection of glasswork will now be a permanent feature in the Titanic Quarter as part of the city’s Maritime Mile.
Tourism Ireland arranged for the beautifully crafted windows to be installed back in 2019 to engage millions of fans of the TV series around the world and to celebrate Northern Ireland as ‘Game of Thrones® Territory’.
The windows each depict a key ‘house’ from the show, as well as the White Walkers and Iron Throne, and originally marked a decade of the filming and production of the series in Northern Ireland.
Their installation was timed to coincide with the broadcast of the show’s final season alongside a campaign called ‘Glass of Thrones’ created by Tourism Ireland and Tourism Northern Ireland in partnership with HBO. In June the campaign won a Bronze Lion award in the outdoor category at the ‘Oscars’ of the advertising and marketing world, the prestigious Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
As travel from overseas to Northern Ireland begins to restart, the Glass of Thrones installation will be an important attraction for fans of the hit TV series visiting Belfast and Northern Ireland.
The six windows form a trail along the Maritime Mile, starting at the AC Hotel by Marriott and passing Titanic Studios, which for 10 years was home to iconic sets such as the Great Hall of the Red Keep and the real Iron Throne. The trail takes in the likes of the Great Light, an exceptionally rare 130-year-old maritime artefact, and ends at HMS Caroline, the last remaining floating survivor of the Battle of Jutland in WW I.
Fans of the show can take a self-guided Glass of Thrones Trail around the windows, posing for selfies, or go with a guide from Game of Thrones Tours who was an extra in the show and who has personal stories from the set.
The blockbusting Game of Thrones® television series may be over, but the legend will always live on in the ‘real Westeros’ of Northern Ireland through an array of attractions and authentic experiences related to the show.
A ‘Doors of Thrones’ trail and multiple Game of Thrones® tours are also available to explore the filming locations that formed the backdrop to the series, with many led by locals who worked as actors, extras, crew and drivers who can share great insider stories.
Fans should also lookout for a major new attraction expected to open later this year. The Game of Thrones Studio Tour will be housed in the Linen Mill Studios, one of the key facilities used for filming the history-making TV show in Northern Ireland.
Situated in Banbridge, County Down, the thrilling new attraction will offer a deeply immersive, high-sensory experience featuring fully dressed sets, authentic costumes, weaponry and props all evoking the show’s epic medieval fantasy world.
