Number of rail journeys over more than 30 kilometres up by 44%, on average, while 9-euro ticket was available
Highest increase of 57% recorded for rail journeys over distances between 100 and 300 kilometres
Rail travel nearing pre-crisis level as temporary offer is no longer available
WIESBADEN – When the 9-euro ticket for all of Germany was available from June to August 2022, people much more frequently took the train to travel distances of 30 kilometres and over than in the same period of 2019. The number of rail journeys recorded per day was up 44%, on average.
Road travel over such distances remained constant compared with 2019 during that period. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports this on the basis of an experimental ad-hoc evaluation of aggregated and anonymised mobile network data from the Analytics company. Information on rail travel over less than 30 kilometres cannot be derived from the data.
The German Government introduced the “9-euro ticket,” for three months, intended to help combat high inflation and fuel prices.
