One weekly connection each from Frankfurt to Akureyri and to EgilsstaĂ°ir
Welcome to the land of fire and ice: Germany’s most popular holiday airline is bringing travellers to Iceland for the first time. From May 2023, Condor will be offering a weekly night flight from Frankfurt to Akureyri in the north and to EgilsstaĂ°ir in east Iceland. The airline is thus adding two attractive destinations in the north to its portfolio.
Ralf Teckentrup, CEO of Condor: “Iceland is one of the most popular travel destinations in the north. We look forward to offering our guests the opportunity to discover this varied and natural travel destination for themselves. With the connections to Akureyri and Egilsstaðir, we are also responding to the great demand from numerous tour operators who offer round trips in the north and east of Iceland.”
“We are very pleased that the German airline Condor has chosen Akureyri and EgilsstaĂ°ir as destination airports here in Iceland,” says SigrĂşn Björk JakobsdĂłttir, CEO of Isavia Regional Airports. “Condor’s decision is the result of the intensive promotional activities that we and our employees have carried out to promote the development of further flight connections to Iceland. The work we have done is bearing fruit and we are called Condor in the north and east of Iceland with open welcome to the poor.”
“Akureyri and EgilsstaĂ°ir have excellent airports ready for Condor flights next year,” said SigrĂĂ°ur Dögg GuĂ°mundsdĂłttir, Head of Visit Iceland. “These new flights give our visitors the opportunity to further explore Iceland by landing directly in the north or east of the country. Both regions offer stunning landscapes and have great tourism infrastructure with a wide range of hotels, outdoor activities and facilities.”
So far, Akureyri and EgilsstaĂ°ir are accessible via domestic flights, as well as by car and bus. The two cities are on the ring road that goes around the island and is therefore popular starting points for round trips. Akureyri is Iceland’s fourth-largest city and sits on the shore of a fjord that stretches far inland. Popular destinations are the waterfalls Aldeyjarfoss and GoĂ°afoss, Lake MĂ˝vatn with its numerous lava formations and the town of HĂşsavĂk for whale watching. EgilsstaĂ°ir, the largest town in the area, opens up in East Iceland. From there, the spectacular StuĂ°lagil Gorge and HafrahvammagljĂşfur Gorge in the eastern highlands can be explored, as well as one of Iceland’s highest waterfalls, Hengifoss. The Eastfjords, which stretch south to the picturesque Eystrahorn, offer a unique coastline with numerous small villages and narrow fjords – perfect for experiencing authentic Icelandic everyday life. The region convinces with beautiful nature and a unique animal world. HallormsstaĂ°askĂłgur is the country’s largest forest and home to wild reindeer and puffins that nest along the coast every summer.
