Austria Tourism winter season 2022/23 stars with 4.9 million overnight stays

Almost 50% more overnight stays than in November 2022 of the previous year

Vienna – In November 2022, the first month of the winter tourism season, 4.88 million nights spent were reported in domestic accommodation establishments, according to preliminary results by Statistics Austria. This is 49.5 % more than in November 2021.

“After drastic losses in two Corona winters, Austrian tourism started the winter season this November with 4.9 million overnight stays in hotels, guesthouses, and holiday flats. This is the third-highest number of overnight stays in November after 5.23 million in 2018 and 5.30 million in 2019,” says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

This year’s November result just exceeded the number of overnight stays in November 2017 by 0.8 % and is 6.6 % and 7.9% lower than the November figures for 2018 and 2019, respectively.

More than half of all overnight stays are attributable to guests from abroad

Of the total of 4.88 million overnight stays in November 2022, more than half (2.85 million nights spent) are attributable to guests from abroad. This corresponds to an increase of 57.1 % compared to November of the previous year. With 1.15 million (+33.5 %), 40.4 % of overnight stays by foreign guests were accounted for by German tourists. The number of overnight stays by domestic guests rose by 40 % to 2.04 million compared to November 2021.

The number of guests also increased by 83.2 % to 1.87 million compared to November of the previous year.

55.5 % of all arrivals were accounted for by guests from abroad (1.04 million).
