Austria Tourism in August 2022: number of overnight stays exceeds pre-pandemic levels

Overnight stays by guests from abroad at the highest level since 1993

Vienna – According to preliminary results from Statistics Austria, a total of 20.67 million overnight stays in Austrian accommodation establishments were reported for August 2022. This exceeded the pre-pandemic level of August 2019 by 2.3%.

August saw a particularly high number of overnight stays in Austria this year. This is particularly due to foreign guests, who accounted for 73.7% of the total of 20.67 million overnight stays in August 2022. With 15.24 million overnight stays, the highest number of overnight stays by guests from abroad since August 1993 was achieved. Compared to the pre-pandemic level of August 2019, 3.0% more overnight stays by foreign guests (14.79 million) were reported, compared to August of the previous year it was 4.8% (14. 54 million) more. Almost three-quarters (73.4%) of all overnight stays by guests from abroad were due to guests from the three countries of origin Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. The highest proportion of all foreign guest overnight stays was 57.1% by guests from Germany, followed by overnight stays by guests from the Netherlands (11.3%) and Italy (4.9%).

26.3% of the overnight stays (5.43 million) in August 2022 can be attributed to guests from Austria, which roughly corresponds to the pre-pandemic level of August 2019 (5.40 million overnight stays). Compared to the previous year and the first pandemic August in 2020, this corresponds to a decrease in overnight stays by guests from Germany (August 2021: -12.8%; August 2020: -18.5%).

The summer months of July and August are just below pre-crisis levels

The most important months of the summer tourist season, July and August, recorded a total of 38.62 million overnight stays this year, which is only 0.8% fewer than in the same period in 2019, with the number of overnight stays by foreign guests still being 1.9% below the 2019 level, that of domestic guests was 2.0% above the pre-pandemic level. Compared to the same period of the previous year, overnight stays increased by a total of 6.3%, with domestic guest overnight stays falling by 11.3%, while overnight stays by foreign guests increased by 14.7%.

Twice as many overnights stay in the previous calendar year compared to 2021

The previous calendar year 2022 (January to August) had 101.18 million overnight stays, twice as many as in the same period of 2021 (+100.6%), but was still 12.2% below the pre-pandemic level. 2019 level (115.30 million overnight stays).
