Vienna – According to preliminary results from Statistics Austria, 37.04 million overnight stays in Austrian accommodation establishments were reported for the first half of the summer tourist season (May to July). The figures were thus 4.6% below the comparable period of 2019.
“After two difficult summers for tourism, the first half of the 2022 summer peak season was again particularly busy with overnight stays: With 17.83 million overnight stays in Austrian accommodation providers in July, even the pre-crisis value of July 2019 was only slight at -4.9% fallen short of,” says Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria.
The distribution of overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests is approaching the pre-crisis level
With 37.04 million overnight stays, the first half of the 2022 summer season (May to July) recorded 4.6% fewer overnight stays than the same period in 2019 (38.83 million). 33.0% of the overnight stays were due to domestic guests (2019: 29.9%): At 12.21 million, the number of overnight stays by domestic guests was 5.2% higher than from May to July 2019 (11 .61 million). At 24.83 million, overnight stays by foreign guests recorded a strong increase of 63.4% compared to the previous year but were still 8.8% below the comparative figures for 2019.
Foreign guests mostly from EU countries
An analysis of the countries of origin of guests from abroad in the summer season so far shows that 84.8% of all overnight stays by foreign guests can be traced back to guests from the EU. In the same period of 2019, guests from the EU were responsible for 78.1% of overnight stays by guests from abroad. Although overnight stays by guests from Asia increased again compared to 2020 and 2021, measured against all overnight stays by guests from abroad they are still 3.7 percentage points below the pre-crisis level of 2019.
Overnight stays in the calendar year to date are 15.5% below the pre-crisis level
The previous calendar year 2022 (January to July) was 80.39 million overnight stays, 15.5% below the pre-crisis level of 2019 (95.10 million overnight stays). However, the comparative periods of 2021 (29.67 million overnight stays) and 2020 (63.82 million) were clearly exceeded.
