KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Summer Schedule 2023

As Netherlands’ proposed flight ban, KLM cancels long-haul flights & lays off workers

As Netherland announced the flights ban to curb the corona pandemic, Dutch airline KLM will reportedly cancel its long-haul flights.

On Wednesday, Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced a one-month ban on flights from the U.K., South Africa and many South American nations, which is about to begin on Saturday. The Dutch government was anticipated to impose the restrictions together with a nationwide curfew on Thursday.

In response to the flight ban, KLM has reportedly determined to halt all its long-haul flights and several other flights from Europe beginning Friday, Reuters reported.

Based on the news agency, the airline has 270 weekly lengthy haul flights that can now be canceled.

“As per the information we’ve this will also count for crew members,” KLM spokesperson Gerrie Model informed Reuters. “We can not take the chance that crew members get stuck overseas, so we’ve determined to halt all long-haul flights.”

After Reuters’ report that KLM can be canceling its long-haul flights, the airline announced Thursday that it should lay off between 800 and 1,000 staff. The airline already laid off one other 5,000 staff over the summer due to the pandemic and associated journey restrictions.

KLM CEO Pieter Elbers mentioned in an announcement Thursday that the layoffs will not be totally reflective of how the Dutch government’s newest journey restrictions will affect the corporate.

“The further downsizing of our group doesn’t but encompass the latest measures introduced by the Dutch government in the last 48 hours,” Elbers mentioned. “These new measures are, however, according to the restrictions and dynamics we’ve had to contend with since the beginning of the pandemic, Even when our crewmembers are exempt from new guidelines, the further loss of jobs will regrettably be inevitable,” Elbers added.

Apart from its ban on some flights, the Dutch government has suggested residents to keep away from travel till March 31, for individuals who do determine to journey, they need to show a negative rapid test simply earlier than their departure to the Netherlands, along with a previously required negative PCR test taken 72 hours earlier than arriving,
